Finnland. Cool. – Finland as Guest of Honour at the 2014 Frankfurt Book Fair

The Frankfurt Book Fair is the most important event in the global publishing and media industry’s calendar, and Finland was its Guest of Honour in 2014. FILI was in charge of coordinating Finland’s largest cultural export event – a five-year-long project. The project received half of its funding from the public sector (the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Employment and the Economy) and half from private-sector sources.

Literature and sales of literary translation rights were at the core of the Guest of Honour project. The importance of reading, education and learning was an ever-present focus throughout the project. The project also included a programme of Finnish cultural events and exhibitions at museums and other arts venues in Frankfurt in the autumn of 2014. The Finnish Institute in Germany was in charge of additional cultural programming throughout Germany and the other German-speaking countries.

The aim of the project was to achieve a lasting increase in the sales of translation rights for Finnish literature. The German-language market has traditionally served as a gateway to the rest of the world.
