Literary Exports

What is literary exports?

The term “literary exports” refers to the sales of publishing rights: translation rights for books written in Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi are sold to publishers abroad, which then find translators for the books, publish the books in translation and are responsible for the quality, sales and marketing of the translated works.

Authors decide on the sale of the translation rights to their works. Finland has around a dozen foreign rights departments within publishing companies and independent literary agencies whose main business is selling translation rights. Some authors are represented by agencies outside Finland, and some others handle the sales of their rights themselves.

FILI supports publishers and literary agencies in their sales work. FILI is not a party to rights agreements and does not sell rights itself.
