Thomas Brevik Kjærstad, who lives in Tromsø in northern Norway, arrived in Helsinki via the northern route, by car train from Kolari. Our novice Norwegian translator worked on Petra Rautiainen’s Land of Snow and Ashes during his FILI translator residency. This is Thomas’s first full-length translation, and our Finnish State Award–winning translator Turid Farbregd is serving as his mentor.
Being in Helsinki made it possible to meet with Turid and to network with colleagues: the translators in residency had not known each other previously.
