Nina Pirhonen awarded the Kaarina Helakisa Prize!

Children’s book author and illustrator Nina Pirhonen has been awarded this year’s Kaarina Helakisa prize by the Otava Literary Foundation for her works as a children’s book author. 

With the Leo the Lion picture book series, Pirhonen creates genuine stories about experiencing new emotions as a child, and brings them to life through visually fresh and colourful illustrations that both younger and older readers can appreciate. Her books have been published in Greek and Arabic.

🇬🇷 Psichogios has published Pirhonen’s books ‘Leo leijona tykkää kavereista’ and ‘Leo leijona sanoo ei!’ (Otava, 2019-2020) via Rights & Brands. Translated by Riikka Pulkkinen.

Leo leijona -kuvakirjasarjassa Pirhonen luo lapsille hienoja tarinoita ja kuvituksia tunteiden kohtaamisesta. Pirhosen kirjoja on käännetty tähän mennessä kreikaksi ja arabiaksi.

🇮🇹 Beasts of the Sea by Iida Turpeinen has been nominated for the Premio Strega Europeo in Italy!

Beasts of the Sea (Elolliset, S&S 2023, Helsinki Literary Agency) by Iida Turpeinen continues to enchant the international literary scene: the Italian edition, in translation by Nicola Rainò and published by Neri Pozza, is now nominated for the Premio Strega Europeo in Italy.

The Strega Prize, established in 1947, is the most prominent literary award in Italy, and is awarded on a yearly basis by the Maria and Goffredo Bellonci Foundation. The Premio Strega Europeo (lit. “European Strega Prize”) established in 2014, is the international equivalent of the Strega Prize and is awarded on a yearly basis to a foreign work translated into Italian.

The winner is picked from a selection of five nominees, and will be announced at the Salone del Libro Book Fair in Turin this May. Iida Turpeinen is the first Finnish author to receive a nomination since Rosa Liksom in 2014, with her famous work Compartment Number 6.

Beasts of the Sea is a literary achievement and a breathtaking adventure through three centuries. Approaching natural diversity through individual destinies, it’s a story of grand human ambitions and the urge to resurrect what humankind in its ignorance has destroyed. Steller’s sea cow, a sirenian lost to extinction centuries ago, is revived on the pages and is the red thread that ties together the individual fates of a group of people throughout the centuries. It has already won numerous awards, was nominated for the Finlandia Prize and the Torch-Bearer Prize, and sold over 50.000 copies in Finland alone. The foreign rights have been acquired for 28 language areas so far.

Stories of the North: Sámi & Kven communities in literature, now available in Italian and Dutch!

Two striking novels, two distinct yet intertwined narratives of the Arctic: E.N. Manninen’s Tunturi uhkaa (The Fell Threatens) and Petra Rautiainen’s Meren muisti (Memory of Ocean). Both explore the lives of marginalized communities in the Nordic region—the Sámi and the Kven—unique and touching ways.

🏔️ Tunturi uhkaa / The Fell Threatens (1938, WSOY) immerses us in the Sámi way of life, following Maaret’Ant, a cunning old herder who has seen both the good and the bad. The mighty Tena River flows through Sápmi to the Arctic Ocean, and for over 250km of its length it forms a part of the border between Finland and Norway. Along both banks, people speak the same language. They are one people, arbitrarily divided by the cold water flowing through their homes. Against the vast tundra and the Tena, the novel captures the beauty, resilience, and struggles of a people whose identity is far from being shaped by invisible borders.

🌊 Memory of Ocean (2022, Otava) shifts to Norwegian Lapland in the 1980s, where Aapa, a woman of Kven heritage, returns to a transformed homeland, now shaped by oil wealth and environmental shifts. As she delves into her past, painful memories begin to surface, revealing buried trauma, corporate deception, and the echoes of history.

Both novels challenge dominant narratives—of identity, of history, of power. One through an intimate portrayal of a Sámi family, the other through a thriller-esque story that exposes the lasting impact of industrial exploitation on the Kven people – and all marginalized communities.

🇮🇹 E.N. Manninen’s novel was translated to Italian by Antonio Parente and is published by Edizioni Joker – 86 years after its original publication by WSOY.

🇳🇱 Petra Rautiainen’s ‘Memory of Ocean’ was translated into Dutch by Annemarie Raas and is published by Meridiaan. The rights were acquired through Rights & Brands.

Ellen Strömberg’s YA novel ‘We’ll Just Ride Past’ has been shortlisted for Italy’s Andersen Prize!

After having won the August Prize in Sweden and being nominated for the Finlandia Junior, Strömberg’s coming-of-age novel is making waves abroad. The book follows two young girls in a sleepy town who love to cycle around and live their best teenage lives. The August Prize jury said that “Strömberg describes the turning point of adolescence with sensitivity and accuracy, when the fantasies about who you want to be are suddenly put into practice, friendships are put to the test, and first love feels both alluring and terrifying.” The Finlandia Junior Prize Jury said “The book shows what it feels like to want very much, even though you are not entirely sure what it is you want.”

The Italian edition ‘Poi prenderemo New York’ was translated by Samanta Milton Knowles and is published by Terre di Mezzo. The translation rights have been sold by Helsinki Lit Agency for Catalan, Faroese, Korean, Polish and Slovenian.

Ellen Strömbergin nuortenromaani Vi ska ju bara cykla förbi on ehdolla Italian Anderson-palkinnon saajaksi!

Strömbergin hieno romaani aikuistumisesta voitti August-palkinnon Ruotsissa ja oli lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuuden Finlandia-palkintoehdokas Suomessa – ja se on hurmannut laajemminkin maailmalla! Kirjassa seurataan kahta nuorta tyttöä, jotka tykkäävät pyöräillä ympäri uneliasta kaupunkia ja elää parasta teini-ikäänsä. August -palkintoraati totesi kirjasta, että ”Strömberg kuvaa herkästi ja tarkasti nuoruusiän käännekohtaa, jolloin kuvitelmat siitä, kuka haluaa olla, yhtäkkiä toteutuvat, ystävyyssuhteet joutuvat koetukselle ja ensirakkaus tuntuu sekä houkuttelevalta että pelottavalta.” Finlandia Junior -palkintoraati totesi: ”Kirja näyttää, miltä tuntuu, kun haluaa kovasti, vaikka ei ole täysin varma, mitä haluaa.”

Terre di Mezzo on julkaissut Strömbergin kirjan italiaksi Samanta Milton Knowlesin kääntämänä. Suomessa kirjan on julkaissut S&S ja käännösoikeuksista vastaa Helsinki Lit. Agency. Oikeudet on myyty tähän mennessä viidelle kielialueelle: korea, sloveeni, fääri, katalani ja puola.

Sami Makkosen kauhua ja fantasiaa sekoittava Kalevala: Juhlalaitos (Like, R&B) on komea sarjakuvatulkinta Suomen kansalliseepoksesta. Sarjakuvaromaanin käännösoikeudet on myyty jo Venäjälle ja Yhdysvaltoihin.

Pictured are acclaimed translations of new Finnish literature and a fresh interpretation of the Kalevala. The rights to Iida Turpeinen`s spellbinding novel Elolliset have been sold to 29 language territories, here in Dutch by Annemarie Raas (De Geus, HLA). Anja Portin`s YA novel Radio Popov has been translated into 26 languages, here in Turkish by Özge Bauer (Mundi, HLA). Sami Makkonen`s Kalevala: Juhlalaitos (Like, R&B), a mix of horror and fantasy, is an impressive comic interpretation of the national epic; rights have been sold to Russia and the US.

Agricola wanted to translate the New Testament, but Finnish had no standard written form—so he developed one. His first published work, the 24-page Abckiria (1543), served to teach the basics of reading/writing and Christian prayers. It’s considered to be the first Finnish-language book and led to his greatest work, Se Wsi Testamenti (1548), the first Finnish translation of the New Testament. The 718-page book includes 2 prefaces, in which Agricola explains his use of Turku dialect and his translation sources: Erasmus’ Greek and Latin, Martin Luther’s German, and Olaus Petri’s Swedish texts. The scale of his task – translating sacred texts while laying the groundwork for written Finnish – is hard to fathom for modern translators.
