The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are two literary awards given biennially by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), recognising one living author and one living illustrator for their lasting contribution to children’s literature. The former is sometimes called the ‘Nobel Prize for children’s literature’. The winners will be presented at the Ibby World Congress in August 2026.
Timo Parvela is an exceptionally successful author who has been inspiring children to read for over three decades. His works are known for their timeless humour, vivid characters, and thought-provoking themes. From early on, he has also incorporated ecological issues into his storytelling. His books have been translated into 40 languages to date, more than any other living Finnish children’s author.
Among his most famous series are Ella and Friends (Ella ja kaverit), Purdy & Barker (Maukka ja Väykkä), and Kepler62, written together with Bjørn Sortland. All published by Tammi.
Linda Bondestam is one of the most prominent children’s book authors and illustrators in the Nordic countries. In her own books, Bondestam has a unique ability to tackle serious subjects such as climate change and loneliness with warmth and playfulness, making complex ideas accessible to children without losing their depth. She has illustrated more than 40 children’s books, which have collectively been translated into 12 languages. Her expressive artwork not only complements but also deepens the narratives of the authors she collaborates with, adding layers of emotion and meaning that captivate both children and adults alike.
Linda Bondestam’s award-winning solo books include Good Night, World (God natt på Jorden), Good Morning Space (God morgon rymden), My Life at the Bottom (Mitt bottenliv) and Chop Chop: The Story of a Busy Robot (Chop Chop: En Tapper jordbos berättelse). All published by Förlaget.

Katja Ketun upea romaani Erään kissan tutkimuksia on ilmestynyt saksaksi Tanja Küddelsmannin kääntämänä ja Weissbooksin kustantamana. Ketun romaani on vastikään palkittu Lappi-kirjallisuuspalkinnolla. Lämpimimmät onnittelut!
Vuonna 2017 perustettu palkinto myönnetään joka toinen vuosi Lapin yleisten kirjastojen toimesta erinomaiselle teokselle, jossa kuvataan Lappia tai jonka on kirjoittanut Lapista kotoisin oleva kirjailija. Katja Ketun romaanin käännösoikeudet on myyty jo 11 kielialueelle.

Katja Kettu’s wonderful novel ’The Investigations of a Certain Cat’ is now available in German, translated by Tanja Küddelsmann and published by Weissbooks. Kettu’s novel was recently awarded the Lapland Literature Prize. Warm congratulations!
The Lapland Literature Prize, established in 2017, is awarded biennially by the public libraries of Lapland either to an outstanding novel depicting Lapland or a Finnish novel written by an author hailing from Lapland. The translation rights to Katja Kettu’s book have already been sold to 11 language territories.

Tiia Strandén and Johanna Pitkänen from FILI worked at the Leipzig Book Fair from March 27–28. As usual, there was a Nordic joint stand (4 C304). At the fair and elsewhere in Leipzig, Finnish authors Katja Kettu (Forschungen einer Katze, Weissbooks Verlag, transl. Tanja Küddelsmann), Maria Turtschaninoff (Moorhöhe, Rowohlt, transl. Ulla Ackermann), Ville Ranta (Wie ich Frankreich erobert habe, Reprodukt, transl. Elina Kritzokat), and Taina Tervonen (Die Reparatur der Lebenden) are presenting their magnificent books translated into German.

Tiia Strandén ja Johanna Pitkänen FILIstä työskentelivät Leipzigin kirjamessuilla 27.–28. maaliskuuta. Messuilla on tuttuun tapaan yhteispohjoismainen osasto (4 C304). Messuilla ja muualla Leipzigissa saksaksi käännetyistä upeista kirjoistaan ovat puhumassa myös suomalaiset kirjailijat Katja Kettu, Maria Turtschaninoff, Ville Ranta ja Taina Tervonen.

Penelope and the Curious Clothing Commotion by Saara Kekäläinen & Reetta Niemensivu (ill.) has been awarded the Limmi Literature Prize! 🎉
The Limmi Literature Prize, founded in connection with the Limmi Literature Festival in Liminka, is awarded on a yearly basis to Finnish illustrated children’s books. A jury of adults picks a selection of books from which a winner is picked by children themselves.
In ‘Penelope and the Curious Clothing Commotion’ Penelope learns to get dressed by herself, but she has a sneaking suspicion that the clothes have it in for her. What if Penelope gets lost inside her clothes and pops out of a sleeve and into the wrong story? Or accidentally puts on Dad’s shirt and has to shave and go to work every morning?
Penelope is a little girl with a penchant for finding adventure in ordinary tasks. Before learning to get dressed, she had to make her peace with a dangerous-looking morning porridge in ‘Penelope and the Perilous Porridge’, and learned what happens to children’s teeth when they start wiggling in Penelope and the ‘Big Baby Tooth Ballyhoo’. The Penelope series is guaranteed to warm the hearts of children and adults alike.
Saara Kekäläinen is an author known for her clever children’s stories in which universal themes are handled with abundant humour.
Reetta Niemensivu is an illustrator known for the delightful imagery in many well-loved and successful Finnish books for children.
🇱🇻 Latvijas Medij acquired the Latvian rights to Penelope and the Curious Clothing Commotion (Valpuri ja valtaisa vaatekaos, Tammi 2024) last year from Helsinki Literary Agency.

Herzlichen Glückwünsch, Stefan Moster! 🇩🇪 🎉
The German Academy for Language and Literature will award this year’s Johann-Heinrich-Voß Prize for Translation to Stefan Moster for his brilliant translations of Finnish literature into German.
The Voß Prize has been awarded by the Academy since 1958. It honours a lifetime of work in translation and outstanding individual achievements for translations into German.
Stefan Moster has translated more than 125 Finnish books into German, including works by authors such as Selja Ahava, Olli Jalonen, Rosa Liksom, Sofi Oksanen, Pajtim Statovci, Eeva-Liisa Manner and Mia Kankimäki. Moster is known for finding the most convincing equivalents in German for the sound, rhythm and the subtlest nuances of meaning in a Finnish text.
Moster’s tour de force is his translation of Volter Kilpi’s monumental work Alastalon salissa (1933). The 800-page story covers a period of only six hours, written partly in a stream-of-consciousness style with sentences often longer than half a page. No small undertaking!
Huge congratulations to Stefan for his priceless cultural contributions. ♥️
The award ceremony will take place on 5 April in Bolzano as part of the Academy conference.

Saksalainen Kielen ja kirjallisuuden akatemia myöntää tämän vuoden Johann-Heinrich-Voß -kääntäjäpalkinnon Stefan Mosterille hänen upeasta työstään Suomen kirjallisuuden saksantajana. Akatemian myöntämää kääntäjäpalkintoa on jaettu vuodesta 1958 asti. Palkinto myönnetään elämäntyöstä kääntäjänä sekä loistavista yksittäisistä Suomen kirjallisuuden saksannoksista.
Moster on kääntänyt saksaksi lukemattoman määrän laatukirjallisuutta, yli 125 teosta, muun muassa Selja Ahavan, Olli Jalosen, Rosa Liksomin, Sofi Oksasen, Pajtim Statovcin, Eeva-Liisa Mannerin and Mia Kankimäen tuotantoa. Moster loihtii aina vakuuttavasti saksankielisen vastineen suomenkielisen tekstin äänille, rytmeille ja hienoimmillekin merkitysvivahteille.

Finnish literature making waves in the Czech Republic!
Two Finnish books are in the running for this year’s Magnesia Litera Award (‘Best Translation’ Category), the most important prize in the Czech literary scene: Pirkko Saisio’s ‘Passion’, in translation by Michal Švec and published by Host via Helsinki Literary Agency; and Maria Turtschaninoff’s ‘Inherited Land/Tangled Roots’, translated by Marie Voslářová and published by Argo via Elina Ahlback Literary Agency.
Warm congratulations to the translators, authors, publishers and agents – and fingers crossed!
Saisio’s novel was nominated for the Finlandia Prize upon its release, and it sold almost 30.000 copies in less than six months. Passion was also recently included in the Readers’ and Critics’ Selections of the 100 Best Books from Finland. Saisio’s works have been translated into ten languages worldwide.
Turtschaninoff is known for crafting lyrical, historically inspired fantasy stories that feature strong female protagonists. In addition to other awards and prizes, she won the Svenska Yle Literary Prize 2023 and the Eeva Joenpelto Literary Prize 2024 for her literary masterpiece ‘Inherited Land/Tangled Roots’.
Michal Švec has translated a wide range of literary genres, from historical novels to children’s books and poetry. Marie Voslářová also has a long line of translations under her belt. Her translations have won both the Muriel Award and the Tomáš Hrách Prize.

Erinomaista Minna Canthin ja tasa-arvon päivää!
Minna Canth (1844–1897) on yksi Suomen historian vaikuttavimmista henkilöistä. Hän oli ensimmäinen suomeksi kirjoittava naistoimittaja ja kirjailija. Canth oli myös rohkea feministi ja yhteiskunnallinen vaikuttaja, jonka tunnettu näytelmä Työmiehen vaimo sai aikaan jopa lakimuutoksen siitä, että naiset saisivat hallita omaa omaisuuttaan. Canth kuului suomalaisen realismin uranuurtajiin. Hän kirjoitti näytelmiä, pienoisromaaneja ja novelleja ja pohti tuotannossaan muun muassa yhteiskuntaa, naisena ja ihmisenä olemista, rakkautta ja kasvatuksen merkitystä. Lisäksi Canth oli menestyksekäs kauppias ja seitsemän lapsen yksinhuoltaja.

Happy Minna Canth and Equality Day!
Minna Canth (1844-1897) is one of the most influential figures in Finnish history. She was the first Finnish-speaking woman journalist and writer. Canth was also a courageous feminist and social activist. One of her most famous plays, Työmiehen vaimo (The Wife of a Workman), prompted the Finnish Parliament to pass a new law allowing married women to hold property in their own right. Canth was one of the pioneers of Finnish realism; she wrote plays, novellas and short stories. Through sharp dialogue and compelling narratives from a women’s perspective, she reflected on society, on being both a woman and a human being, on love, and on the importance of education. Furthermore, Canth was a successful salesperson and single parent to seven children.
Minna Canth’s works have been translated into 13 languages. Pictured are translations of her works The Wife of a Workman (in Spanish by Luiza Gutiérrez), Hanna (in Bulgarian by Maksim Stoev and German by Nadine Erler), and Salakari (in Turkish by Riitta Cankoçak).
