Herzlichen Glückwünsch, Stefan Moster! 🇩🇪 🎉
The German Academy for Language and Literature will award this year’s Johann-Heinrich-Voß Prize for Translation to Stefan Moster for his brilliant translations of Finnish literature into German.
The Voß Prize has been awarded by the Academy since 1958. It honours a lifetime of work in translation and outstanding individual achievements for translations into German.
Stefan Moster has translated more than 125 Finnish books into German, including works by authors such as Selja Ahava, Olli Jalonen, Rosa Liksom, Sofi Oksanen, Pajtim Statovci, Eeva-Liisa Manner and Mia Kankimäki. Moster is known for finding the most convincing equivalents in German for the sound, rhythm and the subtlest nuances of meaning in a Finnish text.
Moster’s tour de force is his translation of Volter Kilpi’s monumental work Alastalon salissa (1933). The 800-page story covers a period of only six hours, written partly in a stream-of-consciousness style with sentences often longer than half a page. No small undertaking!

The award ceremony will take place on 5 April in Bolzano as part of the Academy conference.

Saksalainen Kielen ja kirjallisuuden akatemia myöntää tämän vuoden Johann-Heinrich-Voß -kääntäjäpalkinnon Stefan Mosterille hänen upeasta työstään Suomen kirjallisuuden saksantajana. Akatemian myöntämää kääntäjäpalkintoa on jaettu vuodesta 1958 asti. Palkinto myönnetään elämäntyöstä kääntäjänä sekä loistavista yksittäisistä Suomen kirjallisuuden saksannoksista.
Moster on kääntänyt saksaksi lukemattoman määrän laatukirjallisuutta, yli 125 teosta, muun muassa Selja Ahavan, Olli Jalosen, Rosa Liksomin, Sofi Oksasen, Pajtim Statovcin, Eeva-Liisa Mannerin and Mia Kankimäen tuotantoa. Moster loihtii aina vakuuttavasti saksankielisen vastineen suomenkielisen tekstin äänille, rytmeille ja hienoimmillekin merkitysvivahteille.

Finnish literature making waves in the Czech Republic!
Two Finnish books are in the running for this year’s Magnesia Litera Award (‘Best Translation’ Category), the most important prize in the Czech literary scene: Pirkko Saisio’s ‘Passion’, in translation by Michal Švec and published by Host via Helsinki Literary Agency; and Maria Turtschaninoff’s ‘Inherited Land/Tangled Roots’, translated by Marie Voslářová and published by Argo via Elina Ahlback Literary Agency.
Warm congratulations to the translators, authors, publishers and agents – and fingers crossed!
Saisio’s novel was nominated for the Finlandia Prize upon its release, and it sold almost 30.000 copies in less than six months. Passion was also recently included in the Readers’ and Critics’ Selections of the 100 Best Books from Finland. Saisio’s works have been translated into ten languages worldwide.
Turtschaninoff is known for crafting lyrical, historically inspired fantasy stories that feature strong female protagonists. In addition to other awards and prizes, she won the Svenska Yle Literary Prize 2023 and the Eeva Joenpelto Literary Prize 2024 for her literary masterpiece ‘Inherited Land/Tangled Roots’.
Michal Švec has translated a wide range of literary genres, from historical novels to children’s books and poetry. Marie Voslářová also has a long line of translations under her belt. Her translations have won both the Muriel Award and the Tomáš Hrách Prize.

Erinomaista Minna Canthin ja tasa-arvon päivää!
Minna Canth (1844–1897) on yksi Suomen historian vaikuttavimmista henkilöistä. Hän oli ensimmäinen suomeksi kirjoittava naistoimittaja ja kirjailija. Canth oli myös rohkea feministi ja yhteiskunnallinen vaikuttaja, jonka tunnettu näytelmä Työmiehen vaimo sai aikaan jopa lakimuutoksen siitä, että naiset saisivat hallita omaa omaisuuttaan. Canth kuului suomalaisen realismin uranuurtajiin. Hän kirjoitti näytelmiä, pienoisromaaneja ja novelleja ja pohti tuotannossaan muun muassa yhteiskuntaa, naisena ja ihmisenä olemista, rakkautta ja kasvatuksen merkitystä. Lisäksi Canth oli menestyksekäs kauppias ja seitsemän lapsen yksinhuoltaja.
Minna Canthin tuotannosta on yli 50 käännöstä 13 kielelle. Kuvassa käännökset Canthin teoksista Työmiehen vaimo (Luiza Gutiérrezin käännös espanjaksi), Hanna (Maksim Stoevin kääntämänä bulgariaksi ja Nadine Erlerin kääntämänä saksaksi) sekä Salakari (Riitta Cankoçakin käännös turkiksi).
Happy Minna Canth and Equality Day!
Minna Canth (1844-1897) is one of the most influential figures in Finnish history. She was the first Finnish-speaking woman journalist and writer. Canth was also a courageous feminist and social activist. One of her most famous plays, Työmiehen vaimo (The Wife of a Workman), prompted the Finnish Parliament to pass a new law allowing married women to hold property in their own right. Canth was one of the pioneers of Finnish realism; she wrote plays, novellas and short stories. Through sharp dialogue and compelling narratives from a women’s perspective, she reflected on society, on being both a woman and a human being, on love, and on the importance of education. Furthermore, Canth was a successful salesperson and single parent to seven children.
Minna Canth’s works have been translated into 13 languages. Pictured are translations of her works The Wife of a Workman (in Spanish by Luiza Gutiérrez), Hanna (in Bulgarian by Maksim Stoev and German by Nadine Erler), and Salakari (in Turkish by Riitta Cankoçak).

Three nonfiction works to expand your horizon – in Italian, Estonian and English!
🇬🇧🇺🇸 Taylor & Francis / Routledge have published Esa Kirkkopelto’s work ‘Logomimesis: A treatise on the performing body’ (‘Logomimesis: Tutkielma esiintyvästä ruumiista’, Tutkijaliitto ry) as part of their Advances in Theatre and Performance Studies series. Translated into English by Kate Sotejeff-Wilson, this book is a study of the body and language on the stage. Inspired by contemporary artistic research and performance philosophy, Kirkkopelto proposes a new understanding of embodiment that has no direct counterpart in existing philosophies of the body, in natural science, or in everyday experience.
🇪🇪 Eksa has published Juhani Salokannel’s history of Estonian literature ‘Vastupanu kultuuriajalugu: Kirjandusvõrgustikud Eestis 1940. aastatest tänapäevani’ (Vastaanpanemisen kulttuurihistoria: Viron kirjallisuuden verkostoja 1940-luvulta nykyaikaan’, Vastapaino). Translated into Estonian by Sirje Olesk. Through the eyes of Salokannel, a Finnish essayist whose work focuses on Estonian literature, the book is based on decades of observations, interviews with Estonian literary figures and archival research. The result is a comprehensive picture of the development of Estonian literature, which differs in its structure and development from that in Finland, through a variety of networks.
🇮🇹 Vocifuoriscena has published the Finnish ethnographer Uno Harva’s work ‘La religione dei popoli altaici’ (‘Altain suvun uskonto’, WSOY), translated into Italian by Elisa Zanchetta. This seminal work is an impressive analysis of the religious imagery of the Altaians, a Turkic ethnic group of the indigenous peoples of Siberia, Mongolia and China. Upon the book’s original publication in 1933, it was so well received that an expanded German translation was published shortly after. Harva’s work marked a true watershed in the principles of ethnological and historical-religious research, because it presented a reasoned and structured approach not only to religion, but to all the principles of existence of the North Eurasian peoples.

Satu Rämö’s bestselling series ‘Hildur’ just hit the 20-language territory mark!
Rämö’s crime novel series, which offers readers a unique cast of Finnish and Icelandic characters and a mystery set in Ísafjörður, has taken the Nordic Noir tradition by storm. Satu Rämö, who is both an author and economist, lives with her husband and two children in the same town in which the Hildur series takes place, in the fjords of western Iceland.
The Hildur series, which was dramatized into a play in 2024 and will be made into a TV series, consists of four books: 1. Hildur, 2. Rósa & Björk, 3. Jakob, and 4. Rakel.

Kääntäjä Lola Rogers, suomalaisen kirjallisuuden kääntäminen ja kirjallisuusvienti hienosti esillä Suomen Kuvalehden tuoreessa jutussa Miten peijooni käännetään. Rogersin käännös Juhani Karilan Pienen hauen pyydystyksestä ”Fishing for the Little Pike” (Isossa-Britanniassa nimellä ”Summer Fishing in Lapland”) valmistui vuonna 2023. Seattlessa asuva Rogers on kääntänyt tähän mennessä lähes 30 suomalaista kirjaa englanniksi ja lisäksi tekstejä antologioihin ja muihin julkaisuihin. Juhani Karilan esikoisromaania on käännetty jo 21 kielelle. Jutussa myös haastatellun Johanna Sinisalon kirjoista on valmistunut yli 40 käännöstä ja lisäksi lukuisia käännöksiä antologioihin.

The translator Lola Rogers, Finnish literature in translation, and literary export as a whole are brilliantly portrayed in Suomen Kuvalehti’s recent article “Miten peijooni käännetään”. Rogers’ translation of Juhani Karila’s “Fishing for the Little Pike” (titled “Summer Fishing in Lapland” in the UK) was completed in 2023. Based in Seattle, Rogers has translated nearly 30 Finnish books into English, as well as texts for anthologies and other publications. Juhani Karila’s debut novel has been translated into 21 languages in total. Johanna Sinisalo, who was also interviewed for the article, has had her books translated over 40 times, along with numerous texts translated for anthologies.
